The use of quartz cuvette is not always necessary and it is dependent on the wave length range been targeted. The transmission rate for quartz cuvette is high (83% or higher) @ UV length range whereas plastic (PS or PMMA) or Optical glass don't.
When organic solvents are used, glass or quartz are preferable because the corvettes display higher resistance when compared to others made from plastic. Generally, quartz cuvette can be used over and over and the display higher transparency and accuracy of measurement.

The AirekaCells quartz cuvettes are designed to hold liquid solution samples. The material ES quartz glass has high transmission rate at UV wavelength range low to 190nm, and excellent performance under visible light range. With IR quartz, you can expect to work with a range up to 3500nm, which covers infrared light testing experiments perfectly.
Our quartz cuvettes are either two windows clear, for use in absorption spectroscopy experiments, or four windows clear, for use in fluorescence spectroscopy. The cuvettes can be cleaned using standard cleaning procedures.
For different budgets and sealing requirements, different spectroscopy cuvette caps are available. To block dust and particles a Teflon lid is used, while a Teflon stopper or screw cap is used to prevent evaporation and ensure strict sealing purpose. The silicon lid is also useful for the balance of sealing and its cost effectiveness as shown below.

The standard 10mm transmission path length of AirekaCells quartz cuvettes with an outer dimension of 12.5x12.5mm is compatible with most of the spectrophotometers in the market. Sub-micro, semi-micro and macro cuvettes are available, which usually sold with a minimum of 2pcs however a single piece MOQ is also negotiable by request.
Above the specified, a wider range of cuvettes for use in spectroscopy and cytometry with optical path lengths spanning 0.1 to 100mm are listed with stock.
The sub-micro and micro cuvettes are usually fitted with glue. These cuvettes should not be used together with Benzene, toluene, aqua Regis, ethanol, corrosive solutions, or other similar substances, as they may degrade the bonds between the pieces and cause leakage in the cuvettes. Use with Aqueous samples and Organic solvents should not be used for glued types.
On the other hand, other cuvettes are fused as one piece and are resistant to corrosive chemicals and high temperatures. When properly cleaned, they don't cause and cross contamination or leakage.

When transmission values of cuvettes are been compared it is essential to ensure that same measurement conditions are put in place. Also note that the transmission curves shown we're plotted using measurements taken from empty cuvettes (2 windows).

The optical path length of a cuvette is the distance of light that goes through the interior walls of a cuvette.
On a standard spectrometer cuvette, the light path or path length will be the inner distance from the front window to the back window. The standard cuvette optical path length is 10mm.

These cuvettes have an exterior height of 45mm, two clear windows and an open top. The cuvettes' walls and the bottom are smooth on the inside. On the outside, the light path windows are clear while the adjacent windows and the bottom are frosted. Typically, windows are 1.25mm thick and each cuvette in this range is supplied with a PTFE cover.

About Z dimension:
The Z dimension of a spectroscopy cuvette/cell is the distance from the bottom of the cuvette to the center of the sample window or aperture (the area through which the light passes).
Z dimension is usually used with small volume cuvettes or flow-through cells when there is a restricted area window aperture.
Above the 10mm standard quartz cuvettes, a wider selection of cuvettes for use in spectroscopy and cytometry with optical path lengths spanning 0.1 to 100mm and above are also listed with stock.
When samples with high absorption coefficents that are too high for a standard 10mm path length cuvette, other types with path Lengths as short as 1mm are available. We have a series of 4 window clear cuvettes which can be used for short and long path lengths simultaneously. For example, a 0.7ml volume cuvette with a path length of 2mm and a standard 10mm all rolled into a single piece. Simply put, the path length to be used is dependent on how you put the cuvette in your spectrophotometer. If the light beam enters through the front window, then you have a 10mm path length cuvette. Whereas, if the cuvette is rotated 90 degrees you have a 2mm path length.

UV-vis quartz cuvettes are designed to hold solution samples for spectroscopic experiments. Quartz cuvettes with 2 clear windows for absorption spectroscopy and quartz cuvettes with 3 or 4 clear windows (polished sides) for fluorescence spectroscopy are available with AirekaCells.
We have quartz cuvettes (some ultra or semi micro-volume cuvettes are glued) in stock which are fused cuvettes, suitable for wavelength 190nm~2500nm. We can also supply IR fused quartz cuvettes for 220nm~3500nm and optical glass cuvettes for 340nm- 2500nm. Macro, semi-micro and ultra-micro volume sizes are all available.

All our in-stock UV-vis fused quartz cuvettes are made by a diffusion bonding method. Quartz is heated to a high temperature and then adhered together by applying pressure. UV-vis quartz cuvettes made in such a method have much stronger chemical and high-temperature resistance.
When high concentration samples are been used, the solution is diluted and this will allow for spectrophotometry measurement with a 10mm path length cuvette. However, there are samples that cannot be easily diluted. For instance, due to interaction with the solvent, some samples cannot be diluted as this will cause a change in the absorbance (i.e. shift in the peak wavelengths)
In these cases when absorbance is high and the dilution of the solution is difficult " short path length cuvettes" is effective. Short path length cuvettes with optical path lengths of 1mm, 2mm, 3mm and 5mm are available. The results obtained by analyzing toluene with a 1mm quartz cuvette and a 10mm ones indicates that there is much less absorption saturation with the 1mm cuvette than there is with the 10mm cell.
Solution analysis in the infrared region is a well-known application of measurement using a short path length cuvette. when 10mm cuvette is used for measurement in the near infrared region, saturation often occurs due to absorption by the solvent, making it difficult to ascertain the absorption of the sample. A short path length cuvette is used to prevent absorption saturation due to the solvent.
The optical path length of the cell is selected based on the size of the absorbance or transmittance of a low or high concentration chemical samples.

What are “long path length” cuvettes and why are they used? (sample too diluted)
For different solution analyses Cuvettes with a standard optical path length of 10mm are used. However, if the sample concentration is low, it may not be possible to obtain enough absorbance using a quartz of all this size. Although, concentrating the sample will allow for the use of 10mm cuvette, concentrating is a difficult in instances when the sample vaporizes or undergoes a chemical change during the concentration process.
In such instances, measurements using a "long path length" is effective. Long path length Cuvettes with optical path lengths of 20mm, 30mm, 40mm, 50mm and 100mm are used. The absorbance increases proportionately to the cuvettes’ optical path length. Results obtained when 10-mg/L potassium permanganate solution was analyzed with a 10mm cuvette and a 100m one shows that the absorbance of the 100m cuvette is ten times that of the 10mm cell.
Turbidity measurement of water is a well-known application of analysis using a long path length cuvette. 50mm and 100mm cells are used to analyze samples with low turbidity.

Why is it important not to have fingerprints on the cuvette?
To avoid interference, finger prints should not be made on the Cuvettes so as to ensure full light absorption in the Spectrophotometer. This produces accurate readings of the absorbance.
It is important to align the cuvette in the sample holder each time so as to ensure that the dimensions of the wall is not different as this may affect the intensity of light passing through the cuvette. Aligning consistently help to achieve accurate readings for absorbance.
